  • Tyler man known as the 'Asian Nazi' made false statements to gun deal

A federal indictment filed in the Eastern District of Texas indicates the man known in the area as the "Asian Nazi" on social media made false statements related to his citizenship status and possession of a license to carry when buying firearms in Tyler.

Heon "Hank" Jong Yoo, 24, of Tyler was arrested April 6 on a federal warrant by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The recently unsealed indictment dated April 18 said Yoo is accused of falsely presenting himself as a U.S. citizen on five separate occasions to three Tyler firearms dealers in 2016. During these incidents Yoo falsely indicated he was a U.S. citizen on ATF firearms transactions records when, in fact, he was not and is not, according to the indictment.

In addition, the indictment said Yoo went to gun stores on Nov. 6, 2017, and Nov. 7, 2017, to buy a shotgun and indicated he held a valid Texas license to carry a handgun. However, Yoo's permit had been revoked.

Federal authorities seized Yoo's firearms, ammunition and accessories and intend to seek criminal forfeiture of the items, according to the indictment.
Authorities want Yoo to forfeit his guns, including but not limited to a 12-gauge shotgun, a Smith and Wesson M&P AR-15 assault rifle, a DPMS LR-308 semi-automatic assault rifle, a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol, a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol, four boxes of ammunition and magazines and two rifle cases with firearms accessories, according to the indictment.

Yoo made an initial appearance in court on April 6 and was appointed a federal public defender. However, court documents show Yoo has retained counsel.
Yoo is being held without bond in the Smith County Jail.

Yoo has gained notoriety on YouTube with videos of him singing “Dixie” while dressed as a Confederate cavalry member and in interviews espousing his views.
Yoo often gives prominent placement to Nazi, alt-right and Confederate imagery in his videos. He has become popular for videos ranting against the Black Lives Matter movement and a video titled “Sieg Heil Taylor Swift." His social media accounts have since been deleted, but the YouTube videos and interviews with alt-right blogs can still be found online.

Yoo told the North Texas Daily, the student newspaper of the University of North Texas, he was attempting to “rile up as many liberals as possible” during a 2016 incident at the college. Yoo is quoted as saying “I’m proud to be prejudiced. I was made in America.”
The North Texas Daily reported that Yoo described himself as a “Neo-Confederate.”
