United Airlines: Chinese anger at violent removal of passenger

Outrage has erupted on Chinese social media over the removal of a passenger from a United Airlines flight.
Videos posted online showed a man, who appears to be Asian, being forcibly dragged from his window seat by security officers.
An eyewitness said the man was a "Chinese American doctor" who would not give up his seat, US media reported. The man has not yet been identified.
United Airlines issued an official apology after the incident.
A video taken by Audra Bridges who was on board the flight from Chicago to Louisville, the visibly distressed man was seen being hauled out of his seat. The video has been shared millions of times and photos of his bloodied face also spread quickly.

Reports said the flight was overbooked and so passengers were randomly selected by United Airlines and asked to leave the flight.
According to the New York Times, passenger Tyler Bridges who witnessed the scene, said that the man had shouted: "I'm being selected because I'm Chinese".
Ms Bridges in her post said: "This man is a doctor and [said he had] to be at the hospital in the morning. He did not want to get off." She added that everyone on board was "shaky and so disgusted".
Outraged passengers witnessing the unfolding events could also be heard in the background yelling and voicing their disgust.

Outrage over the controversial incident soon spread to the Chinese internet, where thousands of shocked and angry netizens took to China's top micro-blogging site Sina Weibo to express their anger with the US airline.
The story tagged "United Airlines forcibly removes passenger from airplane" also shot to the top of the site's trending charts, and was read more than 95.5m times.
"I understand that the airline's reason was that it oversold seats. So they were open to taking people's money easily and bullying someone, who really needed to be somewhere, when it was of no fault of his own?" wrote Weibo user madanamada in a lengthy blog post that drew more than 550 likes from netizens.
"Look at the way they manhandled the poor Chinese man. He doesn't look young either. It must have been downright humiliating to have been dragged off in full view of everyone, kicking and screaming."
Another user said: "Active racial profiling clearly took place here. And America wonders why people attack it for not having respect for social movements?"

Other users like Chang Xiao from Shanghai, shared personal "horror stories" of flying with United Airlines.
"When I was studying overseas, I flew with this airline and found their flight attendants were horribly rude and impatient. My friend and I thought it was because we were Chinese and this incident proves our feelings were correct. How horrible of them to throw a passenger off board just because he looked Asian. What is happening with the world today?"
Over on Chinese chat app WeChat, users called for a boycott of the airline until official action was taken.
But some users pointed out that the issue was not necessarily about race.
"The United Airlines should pay a price for this. Not only because the person who was removed from the flight is of Chinese descent, anyone should have the right to refuse such unreasonable treatment. This is dignity," said on user.

United Airlines video: Man dragged off flight so staff could take his seat, leaked email reveals

'I want to go home, I want to go home,' says bleeding passenger after incident

A passenger who was violently dragged off an overbooked United Airlines flight was removed so staff could take his seat, a leaked email to airline employees has revealed.

Footage of the incident was shared widely on social media and has prompted outrage. The man – who said he was a doctor and needed to get home to treat patients the next day – was filmed with blood flowing down his chin afterwards, saying: “I want to go home, I want to go home."

United risks a backlash from passengers, with many people threatening to boycott the airline at the start of a busy holiday period.

In a letter to employees, United Airlines' parent company chief executive Oscar Munoz revealed the company had been trying to make room for four employees of a partner airline, which resulted in four passengers being told to get off the flight from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport to Louisville.

After the plane was fully boarded, the company’s “gate agents were approached by crew members that were told they needed to board the flight”, the message leaked to ABC said.

The airline had at first asked for volunteers to give up their seats for the airline staff, offering $400 (£322) and then when no one came forward $800 (£645) per passenger. When no one agreed to leave the flight, United selected four passengers at random.

Three got off, but the fourth refused, saying he had patients he needed to treat.

Three city aviation department security officers got on the plane and, after two officers tried to reason with the man, a third pointed at him “basically saying, 'Sir, you have to get off the plane,”' said Tyler Bridges, a passenger whose wife, Audra D Bridges, posted a video on Facebook.

I feel so bad for him; my mom told me that United Airline is racist against Asians. A Vietnamese radio spokesperson just said over the radio that he and another passenger both had the same size laptop. Keep in mind that passenger is White. The personnel from United Airlines told the Vietnamese guy he couldn't bring his laptop on board, but did not say anything to the White guy. She said his laptop was bigger. The Vietnamese passenger told the personnel that are absurd, my laptop is the same size as the other fellow. She argued with him, and he asked to speak to a manager and she said she was the manager. I am sure not all people are racists but with Trump as our President, more and more incidents are happening.

Why does this shit always happen to the Vietnamese? First its the cell phone incident in Singapore. Now this shit. It's like he was crying and begging on his knees to stay on the plane and then these ****ers came and arrested him while the flight attendants laughed in the background. I exaggerate but still.

because other asians keep quiet/silent to let them go unnoticed.

let me rephrase it for you:

how come it is always vietnamese that stand up for asians.

back then if it wasnt for vietnamese who consecutively defeated 2 western powers, then imagine how low westerners would look at asians.

I recall other problematic treatment of customers by United Airlines employees. I'm thinking customer mistreatment is a company-wide problem of the United Airlines, maybe due to a strong labor union.

I think they singled out the asian passenger thinking he would be the easiest person to bully and force off the plane, the same way asians are treated is US schools

they always pick on the person less likely to cause a problem, if the passenger was a big black man or white guy they wouldnt try to force them off the plane like that

I thought the "customer is always right"

they treated him like garbage, he paid for his ticket, they let him on the plane, then tried to kick him off, like pulling the rug from under him, very disrespectful, I guess UA doesnt care about the customer?

If they didnt want him on the plane they shouldnt have let him board, they should tell him the plane is full, dont seat him then change your mind and force him off

they wouldnt do that in a restaurant or hotel if they already accepted you.
