Named by Quentin Tarantino as one of the Top 20 films made since 1992, The Blade is the magnum opus of director Tsui Hark's career (Once upon a Time in China 黃飛鴻, Peking Opera Blue 刀馬旦, Zu Warriors of the Magic Mountain 新蜀山劍俠, Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame 狄仁傑之通天帝國). A remake of Chang Cheh's 1967 classic The One Armed Swordsman (獨臂刀), this fast and thrilling film is both a homage and a deconstruction of the wuxia genre told uniquely through the perspective of the damsel in distress rather than the hero.
